Organic Foods May Not be Domestic or Certified

We have all heard plenty of stories, in the last few years, that questionable ingredients have been added to common consumer products originating from China.

Did you know Whole Foods carries many Organic Foods from China? I didn’t know any particulars about many of our food sources coming from China even in Whole Foods Stores where I would expect to find reliable choices!

This ABC – I -Team story documents some Organic Foods found in upscale Whole Foods stores are labeled in fine print: “Made in China.”

Made in China? How can we be sure Chinese Organics are certified and reliably labeled?

Wow, Marilyn. Thanks for sharing this! I read the labels when I’m in the regular grocery store. However, to be honest I don’t look at the labels for “organic” foods as closely. I especially trust the health food stores. I guess I need to read those labels closer too!

Thanks Marilyn. All the more reason to by from our local farmers and ranchers. I’m renewing my CSA box, found a local farmer for eggs and milk, and ordered my 100% grass fed beef from a local rancher. Let’s all become “local-vores”

Sarah, I hate to be the barer of bad news, but we don’t actually KNOW what our chickens are eating. Unless they are caged or hand fed. Chickens are omnivores and will eat almost anything. We generally consider free range eggs to be the “healthier”, but how could we really know. I keep chickens and love their eggs and their company. My chickens are sort of free range but within a rather small area. I stay out with them while they are out of their coop for their safety so I see them eat frogs, lizards, snakes and such as well as a myriad of insects and other creepy crawlies…Unfortunately chickens that are allowed to free range on farms find other tidbits left by other farm animals as well. Neither eggs nor chickens can be certified as totally organic…whatever that might be. I still believe we should eat locally when possible and know where our food comes from…Happy cows and happy chickens, they’re good things!

My chickens don’t eat organic either, instead they eat local grains freshly ground. I figured that was better (in some respects) than paying 3x as much for organic feed shipped from far away. And they also eat random things, like my dogs’ poop piles…I guess they are scavenger birds by nature.

About Whole Foods carrying organic food from China–I noticed just last week that my daughter’s organic juice boxes had China noted in the fine print. What in the world, why would I buy juice made in China!?! Now I’m checking all the fine print on what we buy.

Growing and consuming organic foods was the normal way of life for our forefathers. Most people are not aware that synthetically packaged foods (made with synthetic ingredients and chemicals to prolong the preservation process) only came around in the mid 1900s. Today, lots of smart consumers have returned to this healthier practice of eating fresh and organically grown foods where the production process is devoid of non-organic pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides.
